Tecticursor by Hyrotrioskjan Tecticursor by Hyrotrioskjan
The first explorers called this creatures tree crocodiles, not because of their appearance but their treacherous behavior. There is nothing what a silvanian plant eater fears more than the sharp and claws of this predator which always attack from above. Other animals on Silvanus are also able to walk on the underside of leafs and the giant branches of the Mundodendralis trees, but only Tecticursur call this enviroment really it's home. There are several species, and with 2,3m is T. atrox the biggest, it's even able to hunt middle sized Scutoceratids like Furcaceras.
Maybe you are now surprised that a animal of this size is able to surprise a relative intelligent plant eater just by Walking at the underside of a branch. Well there are many reasons for that. First and most important: you see here just the "naked" form, the Body of the predator is covered with hair and millions of small grooves which make it's skin hydrophile. For this reason the animal is normally full of lichnes and moss like plants, the perfect camoufalge for a predator of this habitat. in addition Tecticursor have large eyes and often hunts in twilight and sometimes even during the night.
Another reason for the success of this pseudo-athropod is its surprising speed when it's necessary.

P.s.: This creature was inspired by an suggestion of :icondragontunders:

Their planet has low gravity? I'm not sure if something with an exoskeleton can do well at that size with Earth's gravity...

Well that's quite horrifying. Wouldn't want to run into one of those, well, anywhere really. Why do you keep giving me reasons to not want to go to your planet? I'm quite conflicted now :P

I'm going to guess from the shape and orientation of the legs that the rear limbs are the primary killing weapons, the jaws are the secondary killing weapons, and the other limbs are for supporting it in the trees? Could it even walk on the ground?

Haha, don't be afraid, all humans who land on the planet must wear special suits which prevent both biospheres from mixing, no silvanian predator is strong enough to open such a suit =)

The legs of Tecticursor are a interesting construction. The upper side is for walking under branches, the lower for Walking over them.

This thing is quite scary. Could it also have the intelligence to give rise to an intelligent species on Silvanus?

Oh, but aren't there any others like it? As far as I can see, the biggest predators on Silvanus are maggot seals

Very intersting.
Mh, but... I don't get those legs that are hanging down. Are they supposed to be the legs the Tecticursor attacks its victims with? If so, then from what I about predatorous-living insects, these here don't look like attacking arms to me, more like normal middle legs.

Sorry for the critique ^^; I don't want to be mean, just ... asking. Maybe I'm totally on the wrong track and you meant something else? How does the Tecticursor kill its victims once it falls down? :)

I will never look at a stick insect the same way again.

Even though they camouflage themselves totally differently and have their characteristic shape for a totally different reason.

when I clicked on this, I thought the right-hand-side was the head end - either a swimmer or a praying-mantis type of creature.

as this is (turned out to be when I noticed it was pointing to the left), its stunning - and scary. and with the plants growing on it, its like the hungry hunting cousin sloths should have had.

Pachytholus will be the elephant of it#s world, because of the very dense and difficult vegetation the animals tend more to be small. Big animals need open spaces and Silvanus has much more of the opposite =)
