Sitting Brachiosaur by Hyrotrioskjan Sitting Brachiosaur by Hyrotrioskjan
The small conversation which lead to this drawing and sketch dump.
:iconzegh8578: "That lil kink at the base of the tail pop a question into my head: Could sauropods sit? Like a dog, butt down, chest up? I'm having ahard time seeing those ribs support the full weight of the animal laying down, so... I presume, like with elephants, they would prefer not to ever lay down."

:iconscotthartman: "Elephants don't have much of a problem with rib support: [link] If anything they just have an issue find substrates that let them stand up easily on."

I think a sauropod could certainly sit butt-down and chest up, but franking I'd be surprised if they didn't lie down (or role) at least once in a while.

:iconhyrotrioskjan: "A brachiosaur sitting on butt? Something I must draw!"

There will be maybe more of this stuff

I think brachiosaurus could lay down but not for extended periods of time. I think they would be like horses. Horses take naps standing up but for their equivalent of "deep sleep" they normally sleep laying down either stretched out or curled up.  I think brachiosaurus  would do they same thing, but I also think that much like horses the patterns would be different. Adult horses sleep for about three hours each 24-hour per day  The period of each sleep phase is very brief, lasting only a few minutes at a time. Young horses tend to sleep more than mature horses. Senior horses may doze more frequently.
I think young brachiosaurus would be the most likely to lay down while elders would be more likely to stay standing up because it would probably be difficult for them to get up because of their old age. As for their weight on the ribs, I Believe that even if they slept laying down, or if they just laid down for the hell of it it probably would be for a short amount of time much like any big animal, like elephants or horses. As for  protection while sleeping on the ground since it would make them make them much more vulnerable, I Believe That they would probably take turns, much like most herd animals.

Somebody ought to show a sauropod rolling around in a mud bath.

Now if we can only find a sauropod-sized butt print fossil to prove this.

Love it!
And why there would be problems for a 'pod if he wanted to sit or lay on his/her flanks?
I mean, if they were so big they sure as heck had the strenght to support their weight in a wide array of positions, am i rite or what? ;)

Elephants can sit, run, swim and lay, I wouldn't surprised if sauropods were able to do the same.

I've also wondered how they sleep. Even if lying down is no problem, how could they protect themselves? Lying down or even sitting, a sauropod is probably hugely vulnerable. It would be really interesting if the spiny scales on their back actually turned out to cover their entire body.

That's one of the things I thought of. Perhaps some could stay awake as sentries for the rest of the herd.

They would probably be pretty easy to get at if they're lying around, but there might have some acting as sentries or something like that.
