Jaws! by Hyrotrioskjan Jaws! by Hyrotrioskjan
This is the newest stage in the evolution of silvanian vertebrate live. Strange underwater fliers with simple jaws.
Rugognathus lengus is a inhabitant of the shallow waters, for the most tiem of their life these animals lay on the ground und pump plankon rich water through their guts. Thanks to the perfect camouflge of their skin they can do this nearly undisturbed.
Abelia is also a filter feeder but a very different. Some of you know this genera already from my "things which don't fit into the scanner" series. The hook/rake of species like Haminasus wegneri became more bigger and sits now on an elongated part of the spine, a "pseudo-neck". At this animal the rake is used to skratch organic material of all sorts out of cracks and holes. Some stationary organisms which are related to Utertitan use this creatures as for their spores, in a similar manner how flovers on earth it do.
The family of Dubiobrachius is even a bit more derived. The develope the rake into a jaw-like trap for everything which comes in it. There are many species of this fancinating predators and this is just a middle sized, "short necked" genera. Other dubiobrachids have much weirder propotions. After killing the pray the monster open it's real jaws and let it glide directly into its big stomach.

Your Dudiobrachius atrox reminds me a good deal of Opabinia.

I just saw this picture in an article on Facebook about new fossils found. Guess its still April Fools someplace in the world.

Anyway, these creatures look great, though I'm not sure I'd like to go fishing on their planet :)

It's indeed a april fool, but I wouldn't recommend you to go fishing their, the alien-meat isn't healthy for humans ;)

Awesome!!!But , since there is a lot of water and food in the silvanus seas why don't you make bigger "animals" or at least filterfeeeders (not that I have a problem with the "animals" size)?

1. I have already many very big animals on other planets I made.
2. The ecosystem of Silvanus is very dynamic, bigger animals would suffer first when something change.
3. Most food can be found between the roots of the Mundodendralis trees, to move here it's necessary to be not too big.

It's a matter of practice, believe me, my first aliens looked also very unsatisfied. Sometimes you just need to realize how self-evident the body plan of earthly animals is to us, than you can question it. Do a animal need eyes? must they sit on the head? Do they need to be round?...

Well I did succeed in going more alien with the creatures of Isis Gamma, albeit due to my practice with dinosaurs some looked like weird-ass mutated dinosaurs! There was even a clade called Xenosauriformes that paralleled theropod evolution, with giant predators (jawless of course) and also tree-dwellers that evolved into flyers, like skyraptors, knife-crests, xeno-birds and garudas.

Rugognathus reminds me of stonefish.

Dubiobrachius is my favorite, though. (well, out of Silvanius' backboned critters)

*goes back look at the forerake on that last one*

brilliant work; kudos on it all.

I know, when your mind is used to the concept we have on earth, were the head kills and swallow the prey it can be difficult to imagine new constuctions. Thinking different is the biggest art of the alien-ecosystem creator =)

So the mouth on the long neck is used for grabbing and killing prey, and the mouth on the chest is a doorway to the stomach?
