Description
The members of the Bromelioideae grow usually in rainforests, but Aechmea deserti prefer dry locations. There are evidences that, during ancient times, the archipelago was full of Bromelias of all kind (inter alia, giant forms with 3 m diameter), but today only this a smaller species with red flowers had survived on Pyrungata.
Maybe fungi, which grow in the more humid areas is responsible for the extinction.

Does this species grow on another plant like other bromeliads, or does it grow on the ground? I'm guessing ground due to the shape of the roots, but I'm just curious.
What sort of adaptations does this plant have for its desert life which the other now extinct species on the archipelago lacked?
