Description

The most common sea serpent of the pacific ocean is also the most agile natrixosaur. These wonderful colored animal swims through the tropical regions, from the Galapagos archipelago to Japan.

The long snout and the sharp slender teeth already indicate its diet: fish and squids. Gracilinatrix is a predator of the open sea, fast enough to hunt most fishes, but in difference to other sea serpents, these guys hunt also in the dark to chase squid swarms which come to the surface at night. Another interesting behavior is that several specimens can work together to feed on biteballs, with their long bodys they wind around fishswarms and pick from time to time a fish out of it.

During April the females come together at uninhabited Islands in the middle of the pacific to give birth to their offspring. They find the way by using the magnetic field of the earth for orientation. The females are giving birth to two or three small sea serpents which leave their mother after a few days. When still small they often come on land to bath in the sun and even as adults they sometimes lay at the beaches of lone Islands. A few individuals have learned to sprint out of the water to catch prey from the shoreline, for example coconut crabs.

Do want to ask why they have mandibular fenestra, unseen in literally all sauropsids but the archosaurs.
