Gracilinatrix actuarius by Hyrotrioskjan Gracilinatrix actuarius by Hyrotrioskjan
The most common sea serpent of the pacific ocean is also the most agile natrixosaur. These wonderful colored animal swims through the tropical regions, from the Galapagos archipelago to Japan.

The long snout and the sharp slender teeth already indicate its diet: fish and squids. Gracilinatrix is a predator of the open sea, fast enough to hunt most fishes, but in difference to other sea serpents, these guys hunt also in the dark to chase squid swarms which come to the surface at night. Another interesting behavior is that several specimens can work together to feed on biteballs, with their long bodys they wind around fishswarms and pick from time to time a fish out of it.

During April the females come together at uninhabited Islands in the middle of the pacific to give birth to their offspring. They find the way by using the magnetic field of the earth for orientation. The females are giving birth to two or three small sea serpents which leave their mother after a few days. When still small they often come on land to bath in the sun and even as adults they sometimes lay at the beaches of lone Islands. A few individuals have learned to sprint out of the water to catch prey from the shoreline, for example coconut crabs.

You're doing great work restoring those extinct sea serpents. They almost look like freshwater mosasaurs. Are they related to mosasaurs?

Zinnorokkrah is right, Sea Serpents are the sister taxon of mosasaurs and aigialosaurs, and in the past they where even considered as surviving mosasaurs, but they evolved their aquatic livestyle shortly after the K-T extinction event and in many ways they are different from mosasaus.

Actually I understood that, given than these are supposed to be related to monitor lizards right? Well it just kinda struck home how similar they were.

In Hyrotrioskjan's "Dragons of the World" project, all dragons, sea serpents, and their relatives are varanids of the superfamily Varanoidea. Sea serpents are therefore predisposed to look similar to mosasaurs, their taxonomic cousins- this also makes varanids like the Komodo Dragon or Crocodile Monitor flightless dragons, in a sense.

could any of these sea serpents be mistaken for the many lake monsters around the world? (loch ness monster, khaiyr beast, champ)

A few of them =)

Nessie is mostly inspired by young Natrixosaurs which swam sometimes within the Loch Ness out of curiosity. Others are just hoaxes (khaiyr beast) other animals, strange waves or trees in the water.
