Fringe dragon

These small lizards are near the base of an ecosystem which is unique to Nea: the sand seas. While there are also many rocky deserts on Nea nearly 50% of all arid and hyperarid regions are covered in dunes. These regions are nearly dead on the surface but a few centimeters deeper a whole community of organisms thrive. And during the nights even on the surface some animals be spotted. Fringe dragons are among the most common surface dwellers. Their long toes with expanded scales on the back are perfect for running over the hot sand but also to dig into it. They are bad sand-swimmers but very well climbers and, surprisingly, jumpers. In some nights they can be seen near the little vegetation which is out there... sometimes, jumping in the air to catch flying insects.
