Feelertongues by Hyrotrioskjan Feelertongues by Hyrotrioskjan
Diplolinguidae:
Feelertongues or Terrortongues, how some scientists call them, are very small pseudoathropods which are near relatives of sicagnathids  th05.deviantart.net/fs71/200H/…
They very diverse, with 20 genera and 70 species. These are the most common species which can be found nearly everywhere on Silvanus.
They live within the roots of the Mundodendralus trees where they hunt small invertebrates. These roots are full of natural grown tunnels which make the trees much lighter but it's also one of the weakest points of the plants, that's the reason for a huge diversity of parasites which feed on the root juice. Therefor the Diplolinguidae are a important part of the silvanian fauna because they keep the populations of parasites small.

p.s. The "feelers" are atually the two tongues which every pseudothropod has, in this case they became extremely long and work as tactile organs and grapping tools

These are so cool. What do other members of this family look like?

Thanks

They are not much different, but while they are from the outside all very similar, some are unique in their behavior. For example, some species are only able to survive in the inner of Mundodendralis borealis or only feed on a special form of parasite.

That's very cool. So what other things do you have planned for Silvanus?

Much much more :evillaugh:

sorry, I mean... too much to realize it in one PPMP (positive projeckt motivation phase). And I can't talk about it yet because there are still many things which are fuzzy in my head. Some stuff take first shape on paper =)

I approve of this.
Bugs for the win ! BTW, what is the oxygen level of Sylvanus, or don't the Pseudoarthropods breathe through their skin ?

asenvolk is right, these are the breathing holes =)

The atmosphere is a bit thicker than on earth but the oxygen portion is not much bigger

Ah, okay. Though from what I've seen, arthropods need a high oxygen concentration in the atmosphere to grow to huge sizes ;)

Well, these aren't athropods, pseudoathropods have a very different physiology =)

if you look at the back of their abdomen you will see 3 holes on each side.

Thanks :3 I guess it means the oxygen ration is incredibly high.

Well the problem with bugs is that they depend on simple diffusion, but if they had a form of diaphragm inside drawing in and out of the body then they would need less oxygen.

About the use of their tongues to catch prey, I think it would work if the tongues normally skated like snakes across whatever substrate flora was present, and of course the low gravity would help.

However, I have to agree with asasenvolk. There could be problems with this sort of setup

The tongues are different build compared to "earth tongues" or the tentacles of squids. I will submit a few sketches of these organs in the scraps folder.

Diplolingua bauri looks to be grabbing prey with the feeler, but it looks like it might be fairly thin in an atmospheric medium. their is a reason squid and octopi arms are of limited use out of water.  Not saying their are not ways it might work, I am just trying to figure out how.
