Description

This species is known since 1991 by 3 specimes (and a few fragments), one from the Paris Basin and two from the Mainz Basin. The fossils range from the late oligocene to the late miocene and are all found in marine layers.
The dragon was heterodont- had different forms of teeth- the teeth near the nostrils were pointed but without dentilces, instead the teeth in the back of he jaw were flat and dull, perfect to crush shells and crabs.

The taxonomic position in the tree of the Aquilapoda was uncertain for a long time, at first it was presumed that the species stands at the base of the Wyvernidae (Eurovenator etc.) than some scientists suggest that it is a sister taxon of Megaceloxus and it's relatives. Today most experts accept that Brutodens is part of a own, very specialized family which secede from the rest of the Aquilapoda shortly after the first members of this suborder appeared.
